Provisional Therapists work under the supervision of a licensed therapist or psychologist to provide therapeutic services to individuals, families, and couples. They assess clients’ needs, gather background information, determine diagnoses, and develop individualized treatment plans. Using evidence-based interventions, they help clients build coping strategies, improve relationships, and support overall well-being. Services may include counseling, psychotherapy, behavior modification, trauma and co-occurring therapy, and telehealth within the therapist’s region and scope of practice. The role includes completing clinical documentation and required training, participating in treatment meetings, coordinating with internal departments and community referral sources, and responding to crises. Therapists must follow applicable state, accreditation, and agency standards, as well as professional ethics and agency policies. The role may also involve clinical consultation and, once professional requirements are met, supervision or guidance for individuals in training. The position requires a relevant master’s degree and provisional licensure in the state of practice, with the ability to pursue full licensure and willingness to become licensed in additional states. For school-based services, the therapist must be able to provide services at the school site during school operating hours.
