About The Position

Volunteers of America–Greater New York (VOA–Greater New York) is a leading anti-poverty organization serving neighbors in need across New York City, Northern New Jersey, and Westchester. Through 70+ programs, we support over 35,000 adults and children each year, including individuals experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, youth aging out of foster care, veterans, seniors, and children with developmental delays. The Youth Care Counselor is responsible for implementing and teaching targeted skills, carrying out individual service plans and counseling residents in skill and goal development. In the absence of family, parents, or supervisors, may be responsible for total care of residents. Completes reports or program materials as required. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a mental health, health or other appropriate human services related discipline, OR a high school diploma and two year’s experience involving the supervision of adolescents in the human services field.
  • Availability to work a changeable schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and teach targeted skills.
  • Carry out individual service plans.
  • Counsel residents in skill and goal development.
  • Provide total care of residents in the absence of family, parents, or supervisors.
  • Complete reports or program materials as required.
  • Teach targeted skills to residents and counsel residents in skill and goal development.
  • Role model appropriate social behavior, teaching interactions and corrective feedback.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with residents, co-workers, family members, neighbors, and community resources.
  • Counsel towards resource development and use of behavioral therapeutic intervention towards goal attainment.
  • Coach and assist residents in the performance of daily household chores.
  • Assist in the planning and supervision of recreational activities.
  • Supervise assigned staff.
