About The Position

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN) is seeking full-time Youth Advocates for the Adolfo Housing Program at their Mather Community Campus. VOA-NCNN is a large nonprofit organization with nearly 500 employees dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives. Founded in 1911, VOA-NCNN operates over 40 programs focused on housing, employment, substance abuse, and recovery services for various populations, providing shelter or housing to over 3,500 individuals nightly. Their mission is to change individual lives, instill hope, increase self-worth, and facilitate independence through quality housing, employment, and supportive services. The Adolfo Housing Program aims to inspire self-sufficiency, dignity, and hope by providing critical health and human services.

Requirements

  • Two years of successful experience in the delivery of human services or any combination of education, training, and experience which would provide the knowledge and ability to complete the duties outlined.
  • Demonstrated ability in record keeping.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of problems unique to young adults, minorities, persons with disabilities, substance abuse, and the general foster youth population.
  • Valid California driver's license and ability to meet the organization’s insurance carrier guidelines.
  • Must pass all required background clearances in accordance with agency, County, State, and federal standards.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required within 90 days of employment.
  • Completion and maintenance of all required training and health clearances.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Critical thinking, analyzing information, and making reasonable decisions.
  • Skilled in Microsoft 365 computer applications.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Fluency in English, legible handwriting, skills in record-keeping.
  • Ability to de-escalate crises and assist residents and staff in emergencies.

Nice To Haves

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or a related field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a case management plan to assist clients with accessing continuing education, employment, and addressing bio-psychological and social issues that may lead to homelessness, criminal behavior, or non-productive lifestyles.
  • Provide life skills training.
  • Conduct needs assessments on all clients upon entry, evaluating medical, physical, emotional, psychological, and legal needs.
  • Provide financial planning, education, budgeting, and assistance with managing credit and bank accounts.
  • Coordinate employment, educational, and recovery options for substance abuse, mental illness, or other special needs.
  • Develop and conduct living skills training and education, individually and in groups.
  • Coordinate transportation needs, which may include escorting/transporting clients.
  • Provide individual and group counseling.
  • Assist in securing all viable income sources.
  • Facilitate recreational activities.
  • Provide crisis intervention and management as needed.
  • Provide aftercare services for up to one year after discharge.
  • Integrate trauma-informed practices.
  • Act as a liaison between clients and community service agencies to meet client needs.
  • Maintain a list of all available community services and providers.
  • Assure a safe, non-judgmental environment for clients.
  • Maintain positive, professional relationships with clients and staff.
  • Participate in agency and outside training sessions.
  • Maintain files on each participant, including psych-social information, and short- and long-term plans for self-sufficiency.
  • Document progress and assistance in removing obstacles to set goals, providing routine documentation of coordination and follow-up.
  • Ensure records and services comply with agency policies, regulatory, and funding source requirements.
  • Maintain daily, clear, and thorough communication with the Program Supervisor.
  • Perform other reasonable related duties as assigned by the Program Manager.
  • Provide emergency shift coverage when necessary.
