About The Position

The Yellow Iron Heavy Machinery Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on heavy construction equipment ("yellow iron") to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. This position works on a variety of diesel-powered construction equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, loaders, motor graders, articulated dump trucks, rollers, and other heavy machinery used in civil construction projects. The mechanic will troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, powertrain, and engine systems while maintaining compliance with company safety standards and manufacturer specifications.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 3+ years of experience repairing heavy construction equipment or equivalent military/mechanical experience.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, powertrain components, and heavy equipment diagnostics.
  • Ability to operate diagnostic software and electronic service tools.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to travel to field job sites when needed.

  • CDL preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled service on heavy construction equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, engine, drivetrain, and pneumatic system failures.
  • Repair and replace components including engines, transmissions, final drives, pumps, cylinders, valves, bearings, hoses, and undercarriage components.
  • Inspect equipment for safety, wear, and operational deficiencies.
  • Read and interpret service manuals, hydraulic schematics, electrical diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • Use computerized diagnostic software and manufacturer service tools to troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and minor machining as necessary to complete repairs.
  • Conduct field service repairs at construction sites and emergency breakdown repairs when required.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair documentation, and parts usage.
  • Coordinate with equipment operators to identify equipment concerns and verify repairs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Follow all OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and environmental requirements.
  • Assist in equipment inspections for DOT and company compliance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
