About The Position

Union Pacific is seeking high-energy, analytical problem solvers for a year-round internship in Network Planning & Operations (NPO) at its headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. The NPO intern will support key performance and planning initiatives within the Operating department, which is responsible for train scheduling and strategic planning for various resources, as well as managing key performance indicators (KPIs). The intern will contribute to projects involving performance metrics, regulatory reporting, strategic initiatives, and goal setting, collaborating with diverse stakeholders. This role offers hands-on experience in data analytics and project management, including building reports, answering metric-related questions, and performing ad-hoc analyses. The work schedule is flexible, accommodating course commitments, with up to 40 hours per week during summer and 15-20 hours per week during the academic year.

Requirements

  • College credits equivalent to one year toward an undergraduate degree
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic organization, prioritization and time/project management skills
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship

Nice To Haves

  • Currently pursuing a degree in a related field such as mathematics, computer science, business analytics, finance, operations research, supply chain, data science or rail transportation engineering
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Excel, Access, SQL, Tableau, or Power BI
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a willingness to ask questions and learn
  • Ability to think critically, evaluate various options and make decisions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Learn and perform core business processes and systems used in Network Planning & Operations
  • Assist in creating self-service dashboards, visualizations, and performance metrics
  • Perform ad-hoc analyses and support decision-making through data-driven insights
  • Provide operational support to department business group managers
  • Build and strengthen a network of professional contacts within departments and across the company
  • Assist with project management for various company initiatives and special projects
  • Perform other duties as assigned
