General Dynamics - Bath Iron Works•Bath, ME
•$35 - $39•Onsite

About The Position

Bath Iron Works is hiring a Yard Rigger responsible for safely and properly lifting items throughout the shipyard. Yard Riggers operate specialized machinery, remote-controlled bridge cranes, and a unit transporter capable of hauling 500 tons. Assignments may include a variety of Yard Rigger Trade tasks, including selecting and assembling rigging gear, determining gear load capacities, attaching and detaching loads, and directing crane operators using hand signals or radio. The role also includes basic and complex hand rigging, complex, engineered, and drift lifts, mobile equipment operation, and rigging gear inspection. Yard Riggers must comply with applicable processes and procedures, including Work Instructions, Safety Procedure Manuals, and SII.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 3 years of documented rigging experience in industrial, shipyard, construction, or heavy manufacturing environments as a full-time rigger.
  • Ability to safely perform rigging operations on ships, on the ground, at height, and in yard buildings under varied weather and environmental conditions.
  • Proficiency identifying and selecting appropriate below-the-hook lifting devices, including hooks, clamps, spreader bars, lifting beams, and specialty attachments.
  • Ability to calculate sling angles, capacities, and load-share distribution and keep rigging configurations within safe working load limits.
  • Ability to determine a load’s center of gravity and adjust rigging to maintain stability during lifting, turning, and lowering.
  • Ability to assess load characteristics and select a safe and effective rigging method, including chain slings, wire rope slings, synthetic slings, and specialty wraps.
  • Knowledge and practical application of standard hand signals and verbal communication methods used in crane and rigging operations.
  • Must meet the requirements in the Y02 Physical Task Analysis, including lifting, carrying, climbing, and working in confined spaces or elevated areas.
  • Comprehensive understanding of OSHA, NAVSEA, and Bath Iron Works rigging safety standards, including pre-use inspections, safe lifting practices, and hazard recognition.
  • Ability to identify rigging hazards, evaluate alternatives, and make safe, timely decisions under operational pressure.
  • Ability to coordinate with crane operators, rigging crews, and supervisors to execute lifts safely and efficiently.

Nice To Haves

  • Shipbuilding crane and hand rigging experience.
  • Accredited rigging certification, such as NCCCO or NCCER.
  • Ability to explain and apply advanced rigging concepts, including load radius, working load ratings, gross capacity, net capacity, rated capacity, sling angles, and usage criteria in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing lift plans for standard and non-standard lifts, including complex or critical lifts involving multiple cranes or specialized lifting equipment.
  • Previous involvement in critical lifts requiring specialized planning and coordination because of load stability, space constraints, or environmental hazards.
  • Skill identifying and mitigating hazards such as shifting loads, uneven weight distribution, pinch points, and interference with structures or equipment.
  • Experience coordinating lifts in tight or restricted access areas with crane operators and other crew members.
  • Ability to adapt rigging practices to wind, weather, temperature extremes, and lighting conditions.
  • Experience mentoring junior riggers or serving as a subject matter expert in safe rigging practices and load handling procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Select and assemble rigging gear.
  • Determine load capacities of rigging gear.
  • Attach and detach loads to lifting gear.
