About The Position

The X-ray Technologist is accountable for the performance and documentation of all diagnostic procedures utilizing proper technical parameters to produce quality studies. This role involves positioning patients, adjusting equipment, and ensuring patient comfort and cooperation through effective communication. The technologist is responsible for accurate database entry of exam charges, maintaining patient privacy, and adhering to all safety standards and practices to ensure patient safety and quality care. They must be knowledgeable in all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the Department of Radiology, including policy and practices, scheduling, and clerical duties. The role also includes operating advanced radiographic equipment, performing surgical rotational support and fluoroscopy, and problem-solving equipment malfunctions or patient limitations. A professional demeanor and adherence to dress code and hospital guidelines are essential.

Requirements

  • Maintains active IEMA License
  • Minimum experience as a Radiologic Technologist, new grad accepted
  • Knowledge all areas of general diagnostic radiology
  • Understanding of positioning and technique factors as in Merrill’s Directory
  • Able to perform all common radiologic procedures
  • ARRT Registry within one year employment
  • IEMA License
  • Able to respond to request to work on short notice
  • Flexible in starting times to meet demand

Responsibilities

  • Positions patient, adjusts equipment, secures immobilization and support devices as needed to perform procedures.
  • Identifies each patient correctly prior to an exam procedure being performed, using two forms of identification, as indicated by the established Advocate Healthcare Time out protocol.
  • Communicates effectively using AIDET with patients before, during and after exams to assure their comfort and cooperation. Provides explanation of delay for testing to patients who are waiting past their scheduled test times. Demonstrates good oral communications skills with patients, fellow associates, physicians and administration. Adheres to Standards of Behavior at all times.
  • Responsible for database entry of appropriate exam charges, starting, completing and verifying each exam for appropriate interpretation by physician upon completion.
  • Responsible for maintaining patient privacy while obtaining patient history and any pertinent continuing discussion.
  • Adherence to proper handwashing technique at all times.
  • Perform associated data center /clerical duties as needed.
  • Prepare transport requests as needed.
  • Schedule inpatients/outpatients as required and dictated by the ongoing patient schedules.
  • Assist patient to and from procedure area by prescribed means, transport patient as required.
  • Must know the duties, and may be required to perform the duties, of the reception desk and data center.
  • Must be able to complete and package a CD of images as requested.
  • Maintains compliance with established safety standards to protect patients and staff at all times.
  • Verifies inpatient and outpatient orders as established by the Time Out protocol.
  • Uses appropriate lead markers as required.
  • Obtain consent indicating that patient is not pregnant. Obtain radiologist consent/input if patient pregnant.
  • Understand the operation, technique factors, and idiosyncrasies of function of commonly used radiographic systems in department.
  • Maintains appropriate competencies as defined by the ACR, Established Regulatory Standards, IEMA and ASRT to and not to exclude any other formal regulatory recommended requirements and/or newly revised standards.
  • Operates all radiographic equipment and can select and modify technical factors as needed to optimize image quality with lowest possible dose.
  • Checks all equipment on a daily basis, inspects for physical hazards in assigned diagnostic rooms, portable units, c-arms and provides report to the Charge Technologist and Clinical Engineering of any malfunctions or hazards.
  • Must be able to do job related problem solving such as malfunction of equipment, alternate patient positioning and views, realizing equipment or patient limitations.
  • Maintains positive guest relations and telephone etiquette following departmental policies and procedures.
  • Presents a consistently pleasant and cooperative demeanor to fellow associates and supervisor.
  • Observes hospital/department guidelines concerning dress, display of name badge, radiation badge and appearance appropriate to the work environment.
  • Avoids excessive absenteeism/tardiness so that attendance does not warrant repeated formal disciplinary action and/or disrupt department productivity.
  • Compliance with Established Regulatory Standards, IDPH, IEMA, OSHA, ARRT and ASRT regulations is essential.
  • Operates portable radiographic equipment and C-arm effectively in patient room, intensive care, GI lab and surgery.
  • Performs set up in Surgery and GI Lab. Documents radiation dose and time use appropriately for all cases.
  • Able to assist OR surgeon/GI lab with PACS related image viewing.
  • Assists radiologists with fluoroscopic procedures to include the more advanced and specialty procedures requiring additional experience and knowledge.
  • Complies with proper screening for allergies.
  • Comply with mandatory DeMedici Computer Program updates.
  • Maintain CPR Certification.
  • Must maintain professional decorum, and adhere to dress code as required by department; no deviations allowed.
  • Attend annual inservices on fire safety, infection control, and radiation protection.
  • Attends additional seminars.
  • Joins society or professional organizations to keep abreast of new developments.
  • Requires a understanding of confidentiality issues as they apply to staff, patients, and information shared by supervisors.
  • Works under frequent stress and sensitive clinical settings.
  • Must function under the established guidelines of policies and procedures manual, and physician and department standards.
