About The Position

The primary purpose of the x-ray inspector is to ensure the safe use of medical and industrial radiation machines. The incumbent will work independently to conduct inspections, investigations and to evaluate multiple types of x-ray machines in various environments, to determine compliance with 10A NCAC 15 North Carolina Regulations for Protection Against Radiation. Responsible for preparing reports of inspection findings, tracking and review of data for state compliance. Maintains current inspection and registration databases for assigned region. Serves as a member of the State Emergency Response Team as required by Homeland Security. Will be responsible for audits of radiologic hazards, unsafe practices, incidents and unusual occurrences and recommends methods for maintaining radiation dose As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). Attends continuing education classes and training to maintain current knowledge of radiologic hazards, public safety and agency needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nuclear science, physical, or environmental science; health/ medical physics, or radiologic science from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented and demonstrated knowledge of the biological effects, principles and physics of radiation as related to practice standards, and principles of radiation in medicine, industry and education.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate orally and in written form technical data and inspection findings as related to radiation safety and compliance.
  • Proven experience working with state rules and federal regulations for radiation safety and compliance.
  • Functional knowledge of radiation survey equipment, radiation machines and radiation testing instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated skills for planning and organizing multiple projects with minimum direction, establishing priorities to meet deadlines and proficient with Microsoft applications.
  • Hold a current registration and be in good standing with the American Registry for Radiological Technologist in at minimum Radiology Technology.
