CLASS DEFINITION A Wastewater Tech Supervisor I Sanitary supervises and participates in the operation of mechanical and electrical equipment at a wastewater treatment plant on an assigned shift. Work of this class involves supervising wastewater operation technicians. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a rotating shift with evening, night, weekend, holiday and callback hours as required or held over until properly relieved or for emergencies. Work is performed in a wastewater treatment plant where there is regular exposure to toxic chemicals, pathogenic bacteria, noxious odors and extremes of weather. Work requires moderate physical exertion.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Four years of experience in the operation, maintenance and minor repair of equipment in a wastewater treatment plant.
  • A valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid State of Maryland Permanent Operator's Certificate Wastewater Class A and Class 5, issued by the Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators, throughout employment.
  • Must be able to wear respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus due to environmental issues.

  • Knowledge of the procedures involved in testing water samples and making equipment adjustments.
  • Knowledge of wastewater processing procedures and the theories of wastewater treatment.
  • Knowledge of Maryland State and Federal regulations regarding permit requirements.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate operating procedures and ensure compliance with requirements.
  • Ability to maintain records and write reports.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform arithmetical computations.
  • Supervisory ability.
