About The Position

Join the City of Jefferson’s Public Works Department and play an important role in protecting our community and environment! We are seeking a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I or II to join our Wastewater Laboratory team. This position is responsible for sample collection and laboratory analysis of wastewater samples as it pertains to the NPDES permit and plant process control. Maintains spreadsheets in accordance to the NPDES permit and federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Position level (Operator I or II) is based on qualifications, experience, and certifications.

Requirements

  • Ability to understand and follow safe procedures.
  • Level I: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must obtain a Missouri Class D Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Level II: Requires two years of relevant experience or a bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, engineering, or a related field.
  • Requires a Missouri Class C Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License.

Responsibilities

  • Collects wastewater, biosolids, industrial, and environmental samples from the treatment plant, collection system, and other designated locations.
  • Performs laboratory analyses and field testing in accordance with approved procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains laboratory data, quality control records, and regulatory documentation.
  • Reports abnormal laboratory results or process trends to supervisory staff.
  • Performs routine maintenance, calibration, and verification of laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • In addition to Operator I duties, Operator II employees perform advanced laboratory analyses for process control and regulatory compliance, conduct quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) activities, monitor hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at the treatment plant and within the collection system, and assist in restaurant Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) inspections.
