About The Position

Effective July 1, 2026, salary range will increase 3%. An employee in this class performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work as a member of a team engaged in the maintenance and repair of the Town’s wastewater treatment facilities. Work involves the inspection, repair, and maintenance of sewer process equipment. Employees carry out frequent gas monitoring and OSHA-required testing in confined spaces. Employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through periodic conferences, observation of results achieved review of records and files, and inspection for adherence to instructions and standard trade and safety practices.

Requirements

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and hearing.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to read gauges, and dials, observe moving parts of machines, operate a computer terminal, and record and review written records.
  • Graduation from high school and some experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment, preferably in a wastewater treatment plant, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain the Wastewater Operator's Grade I level certificate from the State of North Carolina and a Maintenance Technologist certification within 12 months of the date of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Class B Commercial Driver License with Tanker endorsement within six months of the date of hire.

  • Knowledge of administrative policies and procedures of the Town.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.
  • Ability to interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence; Federal, State, and local regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, blowers, and all equipment found throughout the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Troubleshoots and corrects operational problems.
  • Monitors equipment operations and initiates repairs or recommends replacement.
  • Provide technical advice to other wastewater plant employees about the proper operation or repair of the facility and its equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains records on equipment in asset management software.
  • Ensures all activities are carried out safely and adhere to all safety regulations.
  • Ensures all regulations about the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.
  • Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority and follows all policies for reporting.
  • Assists with emergency repairs and work as necessary.
  • Employees are also subject to on-call and call-back work and shall assist in case of emergencies, such as hurricanes and natural disasters.
  • Collects wastewater compliance samples, under EPA guidelines.
  • Collects process control samples and records data to understand trends in the wastewater treatment process.
  • Monitors wastewater treatment process for changes or disturbances and makes timely changes to ensure the process is as efficient as possible.
  • Monitors and maintains adequate quantities of treatment chemicals.
  • Adjusts chemical feed rates as required to maintain process control.
  • Operates biological treatment systems to ensure odor does not negatively impact the community.
  • Utilizes the Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) of the treatment plant and keeps detailed records under the Town’s NPDES permits.
  • Documents plant operational data and work activities using computer records/software and daily logbooks.
  • Looks over the treatment plant process and equipment for proper functioning and ensures recordkeeping.
  • At those times when operator shift relief work is necessary, the primary focus of this position will be to successfully operate the various treatment functions of the wastewater treatment plant during the wastewater treatment plant operator’s absence.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
