About The Position

The Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre at the University of Toronto Mississauga is seeking Writing Instructors for the Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 semesters. These instructors will support undergraduate and graduate students individually and in small groups on various aspects of university writing, including genre conventions, reasoning, organization, style, and language use. The role involves discussing and providing feedback on academic writing assignments across diverse disciplines. Instructors will conduct appointments and drop-in sessions, and may also be involved in delivering group instruction such as workshops. Paid training is mandatory for new instructors or those who haven't trained in the last four months, scheduled for the first two weeks of September.

Requirements

  • A PhD degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Applied Linguistics, Communication, English, Education) with strong writing and oral communication skills.
  • Relevant experience teaching writing in one-on-one or small group settings or experience teaching university-level courses with a writing component.
  • A demonstrated commitment to teaching communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
  • In-person availability Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a writing centre.
  • Experience in teaching English Language Learners at the university level.
  • Experience with STEM writing.

Responsibilities

  • Support students individually and in small groups on university writing (e.g., genre conventions, reasoning, organization, style, and language use).
  • Meet with undergraduate and graduate students to discuss and provide feedback on academic writing assignments from a variety of disciplines.
  • Work with students individually and in small groups during appointment and drop-in sessions.
  • Deliver group instruction (e.g., workshops) on academic writing.
  • Conduct in-person writing appointments.
  • Participate in in-person drop-in Writing Studio sessions.
  • Provide online synchronous instruction.
  • Provide online asynchronous instruction.
