About The Position

We are seeking a Writer I who will provide editorial support for a variety of strategic marketing and communications projects that enhance the brand and promote the work of the designated school/division/department/center. The Office of Pre-Professional Programs and Advising serve Johns Hopkins University undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering pursuing graduate education in medicine, dentistry, other health professions and law. A central component of service is to write Health Professions Committee Letters, which present a holistic overview of each candidate’s application to medical or dental schools. Each summer, the Office of Pre-Professional Programs & Advising composes approximately 450 Committee Letters that support applicants to medical or dental school. Writers play a central role in the writing of those Committee Letters. Content Writers convert applicant information into text suitable for use in the Health Professions Committee Letters. Content Writers work remotely and independently; they are responsible for editing their work as they write.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Responsibilities

  • Research, write, edit, and copy edit content for communications and marketing collateral, e.g., brochures, newsletters, websites, blog posts, articles, advertisements, press releases, media pitches, emails, etc.
  • Assist in the development of innovative communications strategies and tactics that enhance the assigned area’s reputation and help it achieve programmatic goals.
  • Coordinate and conduct interviews with students, instructors, alumni, and others in support of storytelling channels.
  • Conduct interviews and perform research to create and develop stories from concept to final copy. May attend events and functions to gather information.
  • Write analytic, interpretive, and/or highly individualized features.
  • Perform research of source materials to obtain and verify facts and analyze sources for accuracy and relevance to topic.
  • Assist with production schedule and process.
  • Ensure technical and transactional copy is written and organized clearly for the targeted audience.
  • Gather visuals for marketing and communications projects as part of a team that may include photographers and graphic designers.
  • Assist with scheduling and executing photo shoots that capture imagery appropriate for assigned projects.
  • Collaborate as part of cross-functional teams with graphic designers, web developers and designers, video producers, photographers, leadership, and other internal clients.
  • Contribute to project execution, from creative concept development to final deliverables.
  • Provide project management and leadership for projects, including planning and creative, working across departments and with vendors on production and procurement, and fulfillment.
  • Execute targeted, consistent messages to be used across platforms.
  • Gather, incorporate, and share appropriate feedback and approvals as needed.
  • Ensure content meets editorial and voice guidelines and is of the highest professional quality.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet deadlines.
  • Attend mandatory training prior to writing assignments being distributed.
  • Write committee letters according to guidelines provided and proofread letters as they are written. On average, one letter should take approximately 2.5 hours to complete.
  • Collaborate and communicate with Office Pre-Professional Programs and Advising staff and advisors.
  • Comply with confidentiality agreement and ethical guidelines.
  • Meet specified deadlines for letters through employment term.
