The hospital-based Wound Ostomy Nurse serves as a clinical resource and consultant for patients with selected disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems such as acute and chronic wounds (e.g., complex draining wounds, fistulae, pressure ulcers, vascular ulcers) ostomies, percutaneous tubes, and moisture-related skin injuries. Professional responsibilities are carried out through direct patient care, clinical consultation, education, research, and administration. The Wound Ostomy Nurse provides inpatient clinical services throughout the hospital, including the Emergency Department and Wound/Ostomy Care Clinic. MAJOR CHALLENGES 1. Use excellent clinical knowledge to enhance or maintain quality of care within the limitations of the changing healthcare environment. 2. Ensure competence of nursing staff to accept and carry out delegation of care. 3. Meet the daily needs of all patients and interdisciplinary caregivers needing a variety of WOC services/consults in a timely manner with frequently high patient volumes. Patient Population Served: Neonate, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric Consequently, the employee must be competent in the interpretation of a patient's self-report or behavior, and this information must be interpreted with an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional/psychosocial, and chronological maturation process. The treatment of patients should be individualized and should reflect an understanding of the developmental needs and range of treatment needs for each patient.
