About The Position

The Wound Care Nurse RN plays a critical role in providing specialized nursing care focused on the assessment, treatment, and management of patients with acute and chronic wounds. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of wound healing processes, infection control, and patient education to promote optimal recovery outcomes. The nurse will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to develop and implement individualized care plans tailored to each patient's unique needs. Through meticulous documentation and ongoing evaluation, the Wound Care Nurse ensures that treatment protocols are effective and adjusted as necessary. Ultimately, this role aims to enhance patient quality of life by preventing complications and facilitating timely wound healing.

Requirements

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Completion of an accredited nursing program (Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Experience in clinical nursing, preferably with exposure to wound care or related specialties.
  • Strong knowledge of wound care principles, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Clinical assessment skills daily to evaluate wound characteristics and patient conditions accurately.
  • Strong communication skills are essential for educating patients and collaborating with healthcare teams to ensure cohesive care delivery.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities enable the nurse to adapt treatment plans based on patient response and emerging clinical evidence.
  • Technical proficiency in applying various wound dressings and therapies ensures effective and safe treatment administration.
  • Organizational skills support meticulous documentation and compliance with healthcare regulations, contributing to high-quality patient care.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in Wound Care Nursing (e.g., Certified Wound Care Nurse - CWCN).
  • Experience working in outpatient, long-term care, or home health settings focused on wound management.
  • Advanced certifications such as Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse (CHRN) or similar.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and wound care documentation software.
  • Continuing education in wound care innovations and therapies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients' wounds, including size, depth, and signs of infection or complications.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based wound care plans in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • Perform wound cleaning, dressing changes, and apply advanced wound care therapies as appropriate.
  • Educate patients and their families on wound care techniques, prevention strategies, and lifestyle modifications to support healing.
  • Monitor patient progress and document all care activities accurately in medical records.
  • Coordinate referrals to specialists or additional services when necessary to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Maintain compliance with infection control standards and safety protocols during all wound care procedures.
