World Language Teacher - Spanish

About The Position

This position involves instructing monolingual students in the four hallmarks of literacy (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in Spanish. The focus will be on grammar, vocabulary, and language acquisition structure, while also exposing students to the culture and history of Spanish-speaking regions. The teacher will craft lessons aligned with New York State Learning Standards for World Language, utilize various assessment methods including project-based assessments, online exams, and speaking assessments, and communicate student progress to parents and counselors. Responsibilities also include administering Checkpoint A, B, & C exams, collaborating with co-teachers and administrators on instructional strategies, understanding scheduling and graduation pathways related to World Language requirements, evaluating student growth, maintaining classroom behavior, providing professional development for teachers, and developing/revising World Language Curriculum Maps.

Requirements

  • NYS Certified World Language Content (Spanish)
  • Master’s Degree in Education
  • Valid New York State certification in a World Language 7-12 in Spanish
  • Completed three years or more of approved and appropriate teaching of Bilingual, Dual Language, and/or English Language Learners’ programs.
  • Knowledge of scientifically based research, assessment, and professional development in second language acquisition.
  • Knowledge of cultural and linguistically responsive teaching.
  • Knowledge of early literacy skills for grades 7-12.
  • Knowledge of scheduling and 4+1 Graduation pathways as they pertain to World Language graduation requirements 100.2.

Responsibilities

  • Instructing monolingual students in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish.
  • Focusing instruction on grammar, vocabulary, and language acquisition structure.
  • Exposing students to the culture and history of Spanish-speaking places.
  • Crafting lessons based on New York State Learning Standards for World Language.
  • Assessing students using project-based assessments, online end-of-unit exams, and real-time speaking paired assessments.
  • Communicating with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  • Preparation and administration of Checkpoint A, B, & C World Language Assessment exams.
  • Collaborating with co-teachers and administrators on research-based instructional strategies.
  • Evaluating academic and social growth of students.
  • Establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior for a productive and safe classroom environment.
  • Planning and providing professional development for teachers and supporting them in developing and implementing action plans based on student data.
  • Modeling World Language strategies to colleagues.
  • Attending NYSED OBEWL, BOCES, and District-led Professional Development for World Language Teachers.
  • Participating in faculty committees and sponsoring student activities.
  • Developing and revising District World Language Curriculum Maps using Rubicon Atlas.
