About The Position

Provide hands-on leadership and technical expertise in the maintenance shop, performing diagnostic and repair work on the fleet approximately 70% of the time, while supervising and supporting the team of mechanics and apprentices the remaining 30%. Ensure safe, reliable, and efficient transit operations through effective leadership, adherence to safety standards, and exemplary mechanic work.

Requirements

  • Journeyperson Technician Certification (Commercial Transport, Heavy Duty, or Automotive); Red Seal preferred.
  • 3–5+ years of experience performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and government inspections on transit or similar fleet vehicles.
  • Experience using fleet management systems (e.g., Web Fleet Assistant) and basic computer proficiency.
  • Strong knowledge of OH&S / WorkSafeBC regulations and safety standards applicable to fleet maintenance.
  • Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Strong planning, scheduling, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret parts manuals, service guides, and work instructions.
  • Proficient with fleet maintenance software and basic IT skills.
  • Leadership skills, including coaching, mentoring, and team supervision.
  • Excellent communication and safety compliance awareness.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous supervisory, lead hand, or foreman experience is an asset, with demonstrated ability to mentor and lead teams.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise mechanics and apprentices; assign work, set clear expectations, and monitor progress.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop technicians and apprentices, focusing on building skills across the team rather than completing all complex work personally.
  • Manage performance by addressing issues early, providing constructive feedback, and recognizing strong work.
  • Create and maintain a culture of safety, accountability, professionalism, and mutual respect on the shop floor.
  • Lead daily toolbox talks, shift handoffs, and regular team communications to ensure alignment and engagement.
  • Support recruitment, selection, onboarding, and training of new team members.
  • Resolve interpersonal conflicts promptly and support positive team morale.
  • Perform and oversee preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and inspections on the transit and support fleet.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance schedules are followed and properly documented.
  • Monitor and verify timely completion of repairs to meet service deadlines and quality standards.
  • Review and close work orders in fleet management systems; maintain accurate fleet records.
  • Maintain awareness of fleet status, including out-of-service units and upcoming repairs.
  • Spend approximately 70% of work time performing repairs, diagnostics, and inspections on fleet vehicles.
  • Supervise and mentor mechanics and apprentices, assigning tasks and monitoring progress.
  • Conduct safety briefings, toolbox talks, and performance check-ins.
  • Address and document performance issues and escalate when necessary.
  • Assist with staff scheduling, shift planning, and vacation approvals.
  • Enforce company safety policies, OH&S standards, and regulatory compliance at all times.
  • Participate in incident investigations and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure safe use and maintenance of tools, equipment, and shop environment.
  • Support environmental and safety commitments through daily practices.
  • Coordinate with operations to align vehicle availability with service demands and special events.
  • Manage the movement of fleet vehicles between sites for maintenance or inspections.
  • Maintain communication with offsite locations regarding vehicle readiness.
  • Participate in on-call rotations for after-hours breakdowns and provide remote or onsite technical support as needed.
