About The Position

Educational Talent Search (ETS) is a federal TRIO Program funded through the U. S. Department of Education and the Department of Labor to provide academic, career/workforce, and financial counseling to eligible middle and high school students and to encourage them to graduate from high school and pursue their post-secondary education. ETS consists of a Middle School Component that serves 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in five target schools. Tutors are also available to provide assistance for students. The High School Component serves eligible 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders in target schools in Hampton via free tutoring, annual college tours, Financial Aid and Financial Literacy seminars, and career/workforce and academic workshops. This is a grant-funded position. Continuation of the position is contingent upon the continuation of related grant funding.

Requirements

• Master’s Degree in guidance and counseling, career and technical education or a related discipline.
• A minimum of one year of experience in advising, counseling, administrative and supervisory experience.
• Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with students from low-income, first-generation college backgrounds.
• Ability to perform multiple responsibilities simultaneously, to work in a self-directed environment, and to plan and organize on both a daily and long-term basis and lift no more than 25 pounds.
• Demonstrated commitment to the goals and objectives of the Talent Search program.

Responsibilities

• Recruit eligible students into the Educational Talent Search program.
• Regularly monitor and report on participants’ academic progress, program attendance, and participation in project activities, and make appropriate interventions and referrals.
• Conduct individualized and group career advising using labor market information to guide students toward high growth fields and provide workshops on post-secondary options, and workforce readiness skills.
• Coordinate with Hampton City Schools Career and technical education programs and New Horizons Regional Education Centers to align coursework with credential and apprenticeship pathways.
• Assist with coordination of workforce center tours, outreach and recruitment events, serve as a chaperone for local and overnight tours and events.
• Facilitate enrollment into pre-apprenticeship and certification programs and organize exam preparation support for industry certifications.
• Maintain electronic records of all tutoring sessions and review feedback reports to ensure timely intervention as necessary.
• Make presentations to student groups and help secure financial aid to workforce training programs, four-year universities and/or community college, to include providing information on scholarships, grants, work study, loans, and other financial assistance programs.
• Attend all Educational Talent Search staff meetings and submit reports as required.
• Assist the Director with the administrative responsibilities required to effectively manage the program.
• Assists with social media presence through creative design, photos and other records.
