About The Position

The Workers Compensation Manager is responsible for managing the end-to-end workers' compensation claims process to ensure timely, fair, and cost-effective resolution of employee injury claims. This role oversees external partners, drives adherence to regulatory requirements, and implements best practices that reduce claim duration and total cost of risk. This role serves as an advisor to HR, Risk Management, and Operations by providing trend analysis, metrics, and recommendations related to workplace injuries. The ideal candidate combines strong technical claims expertise with a focus on continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, Human Resources, or a related field (equivalent experience may be considered)
  • 5–7+ years of progressive WC claims experience
  • Demonstrated expertise with multi-state workers' compensation laws, regulations, and claims practices
  • Experience managing TPAs, insurers, legal counsel, and medical providers in a mid-to-large employer environment
  • Strong understanding of claim reserving, litigation management, return-to-work programs, and cost containment strategies
  • Proficiency with claims management systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Professional designations such as AIC (Associate in Claims) or ARM (Associate in Risk Management) strongly preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a complex, multi-location or multi-state organization (union/non-union environments a plus)
  • Background in developing and implementing return-to-work and transitional duty programs
  • Demonstrated success reducing WC claim costs, improving closure rates, or enhancing overall program performance
  • Additional certifications such as CPCU, WCCA/WCCP, or CSP
  • Experience with data analytics, dashboards, or BI tools for claims reporting and trend analysis

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the full lifecycle of workers' compensation claims — from initial report through closure — ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant handling
  • Serve as primary liaison to third-party administrators (TPAs), insurers, defense counsel, and medical networks; monitor performance against SLAs and negotiate improvements as needed
  • Review and authorize claim strategies, reserve levels, settlements, and litigation plans in alignment with company policies and financial objectives
  • Monitor claims for early identification of high-risk or complex cases; intervene proactively to influence outcomes, including return-to-work and modified duty programs
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state workers' compensation statutes, regulations, and reporting requirements
  • Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures and best practices for WC claims management across the organization
  • Partner with Risk Management, HR, Safety, and Operations to analyze injury trends, identify root causes, and recommend loss reduction initiatives
  • Prepare and present regular reports and dashboards on claims metrics (claim counts, costs, lost time, open inventory, reserves) for leadership
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to integrate WC claims management with disability, leave of absence, and occupational health programs
  • Manage WC-related financials including reserves, payments, recoveries, and budgeting support
