About The Position

Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL) Information Technology Division (IT) has an opening for a Wiring Infrastructure Lead Engineer to join their Computing Infrastructure Group! In this exciting role, you will serve as Team Lead for the IT Infrastructure technicians responsible for all copper and fiber communications infrastructure and all telecommunications spaces at the Lab. Reporting to the CFG Group Lead, you will work closely with Network, Telephone, and Systems Groups to understand their needs and provide infrastructure support matrixed to the Facilities Division and Scientific Divisions. We are looking for an experienced professional who can operate independently using professional concepts, existing communication standards, and select techniques for the design of complex communications infrastructure for new buildings and coordinate the activities of technicians and contractors. Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field and a minimum of 8 years of demonstrated knowledge of communications cabling, structured cabling systems, communications infrastructure, and the interaction between computer systems and physical security or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with various types of copper and fiber cable physical properties.
  • Experience with plant infrastructure drawings including both underground communication cable routes and building layouts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of complex cable infrastructure including the ability to provide sound technical interpretation and guidance.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of data communications concepts and implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability to install, configure and operate equipment and software applications used to test copper and fiber cable and circuits.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including experience presenting complex issues in both technical and non-technical formats.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including experience collaborating with a broad range of personnel at all levels of an organization.
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license.
  • Lift and pull heavy objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Stoop, bend, and crawl in confined areas.
  • Climb ladders and stairs.
  • Work in confined spaces (especially communications vaults and manholes).
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) to work on construction sites.
  • Perform work outdoors during any weather condition, including responding to failures of communications systems during extreme weather.
  • Work in attics, basements, crawl spaces, roofs, and other areas where communication infrastructure may be installed and maintained.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Team Lead and coordinate daily assignments of workers assigned to the Communications Cabling Team.
  • Serve as principal contact and address inquiries regarding communications cabling.
  • Conceive, plan and implement original approaches to solve complex problems of diverse scope related to installation of both inside and outside plant communications cabling.
  • Train staff on proper techniques used to install and terminate communications cabling.
  • Ensure all material is properly documented on each work order and assigned project.
  • Ensure prompt invoicing and submission of time and materials from completed work order into the IT ticketing and billing portal (freshworks).
  • Provide technical interpretation and guidance by periodically inspecting communications cabling and wiring installations to ensure completed work meets technical performance criteria.
  • Ensure that staff and contractors are properly trained on building, fire, Department of Energy (DOE), and Lab safety requirements.
  • Collaborate with project managers, scientists, and engineers regarding their communications wiring needs.
  • Design communications cabling routes and procure resources to complete required tasks in specified time frames.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Laboratory Division 27 standards and provide guidance on Infrastructure projects.
  • Provide detailed cost estimates for copper/fiber communications cabling projects.
  • Document physical changes (conduit, cable route, fiber, etc.) on plant communications electronic drawings as infrastructure modifications occur.
  • Regularly audit IT Infrastructure Services cable plant documentation for accuracy.
  • Work with customers and project managers to document layout of cabling infrastructure routes and locations for new facilities and large remodels.
  • Monitor and maintain proper inventory levels to ensure adequate telecommunication materials (cable, fiber, connectors, etc.) are on hand for daily work requests.
