Wireless Algorithms Engineer (MAC Layer Scheduling)

Tarana Wireless, Inc.•Milpitas, CA
•$90,000 - $120,000

About The Position

Tarana is seeking an engineer to develop and improve algorithms for the MAC scheduler, which allocates spectrum and antenna resources among users on a sector. The role is suitable for someone who learns quickly and enjoys solving open-ended problems; prior wireless experience is not required. The engineer will work with engineers who design algorithms used in Tarana’s products, initially learning the system by fixing production-code bugs and taking ownership of a sub-component. Over time, the role is expected to include proposing algorithmic changes that affect the performance of the deployed network. The work includes learning wireless fundamentals, reading and writing reviewed code, debugging issues on hardware, analyzing live-network field telemetry, and building simulations to evaluate ideas. The stated salary range is $90,000 to $120,000, with compensation based on factors including skill set, experience, and geographic location. Tarana offers medical, dental, and vision benefits, a 401(k) match, flexible time off, and stock options.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong fundamentals in algorithms, data structures, probability, and linear algebra, with sufficient comfort with proofs to reason about why an approach works.
  • Ability to program well; C++ or C is preferred, though strength in another language and experience writing performance-sensitive code will be considered.
  • Evidence of independently building and improving projects or systems.
  • Ability to explain reasoning clearly, including uncertainty.

Nice To Haves

  • Wireless or communications coursework, including signal processing or information theory.
  • Knowledge of optimization, control theory, or applied machine learning.
  • Embedded or systems programming experience, or experience working with performance and memory constraints.

Responsibilities

  • Learn wireless fundamentals, including signal propagation, interference, and scheduler optimization.
  • Read existing code and submit code for review.
  • Debug problems on real hardware.
  • Analyze field telemetry from a live network.
  • Build simulations to test algorithmic ideas.
  • Fix bugs in production code and take ownership of a sub-component.
  • As experience grows, propose algorithmic changes that affect deployed-network performance.
