Wire Harness Electrical Engineer I

Firefly Aerospace•Cedar Park, TX

About The Position

This is an entry-level electrical engineering position for recent graduates, offering an opportunity to learn foundational principles and grow into avionics hardware development or avionics systems integration roles. Firefly Electrical Engineers on the Interconnect team develop electrical wiring interconnect systems (EWIS) that distribute power and electrical signals within avionics hardware, instrumentation, and payloads. Engineers work in small, collaborative groups across component and system design, manufacturing, and testing. The role involves taking ownership of projects and collaborating on the design, analysis, manufacturing, testing, and final integration of components on launch vehicles and spacecraft. The position is based at Firefly Aerospace, a space and defense technology company headquartered in north Austin, Texas. Applicants must meet applicable U.S. Government space technology export authorization requirements, including ITAR requirements.

Requirements

  • Recent graduate with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in electrical engineering or a related technical field.
  • Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work well in a team, be proactive, and execute with minimal guidance.
  • Detail-oriented and able to manage multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks efficiently.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State to conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including ITAR.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with 3D CAD design, 2D drafting, and PLM software such as Siemens NX, Capital, and Teamcenter.
  • Ability to generate end-to-end interconnect schematics, wire diagrams, 3D models, and drawings.
  • Familiarity with selecting connectors, backshells, wires, and other harness components.
  • Familiarity with harness assembly and shielding integration.
  • Knowledge of IPC/WHMA-A-620 and NASA harness design, fabrication, and installation standards.
  • Experience using test equipment to verify harness design and assembly.
  • Understanding of basic space-rated vehicle subsystems and how avionics integrate into the vehicle and interface with instrumentation.
  • Understanding of electrical grounding requirements and how to implement proper system-level grounding.
  • Experience working with high-speed digital communication protocols.
  • Hands-on experience integrating electronics and harnessing in airborne vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and integrate electrical wiring interconnect system (EWIS) designs on launch vehicles and spacecraft.
  • Understand and implement industry guidelines and requirements for wire harness development and design.
  • Generate schematics, wire diagrams, harness 3D CAD routing, 2D assembly drawings, technical documentation, and reports supporting flight, qualification, and test lab harness assemblies.
  • Coordinate requirements and interfaces between engineering disciplines, production, and integration.
  • Make development decisions based on technical merit, risk, cost, schedule, and/or quality assurance.
  • Support design reviews by presenting design, analysis, and test results and demonstrating that component design and manufacturing meet flight requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to develop ideas, creative designs, and continuous improvements.
  • Tailor aerospace harnessing standards and guidelines into internal design standards and requirements for cable assemblies, shielding, integration, and vehicle-level implementation.
