About The Position

Goddard Riverside is a well-established Manhattan community-based agency with an annual operating budget of approximately $50 million. Goddard Riverside is one of New York City’s leading human service organizations meeting the basic needs of children, youth and families, homeless people, and older adults across Manhattan and New York City. The Lead GED Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in a supportive, engaging learning environment while also overseeing instructional data integrity, student progress tracking, and compliance with program and funder requirements. This role serves as both a primary instructor and a leader in ensuring data-driven instruction and program accountability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of working with adolescents, young adults or adults
  • Strong understanding of adult learning theory and positive youth development practices
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move around the classroom for extended periods during instruction
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods while completing administrative tasks, including data entry and reporting
  • Frequent use of a computer, including typing, viewing screens, and navigating data systems
  • Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and supplies (up to approximately 15–20 pounds)
  • Work is primarily performed in a classroom and office environment within a community-based setting
  • May require occasional evening hours to support program schedules (e.g., evening GED classes)
  • Occasional participation in off-site meetings, trainings, or program events
  • Ability to respond to the needs of a dynamic classroom environment, including managing behavioral challenges in a professional manner

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in social work, youth development, or education
  • Experience working with out-of-school youth and/or adult learners in a workforce development or community-based setting
  • Experience with program compliance, data audits, and performance reporting
  • Familiarity with workforce development programs and funder requirements (WIOA)
  • Bilingual (Spanish or other languages relevant to the community served)
  • Experience with student assessment tools (e.g., TABE) and data-driven instruction
  • Experience facilitating group activities or youth programming.
  • Ability to manage group dynamics and implement positive behavior support strategies.
  • Cultural competency and experience working with diverse youth populations.
  • Enthusiasm for mentoring and supporting teen development.
  • Basic understanding of word processors (Microsoft Word, Google Docs)

Responsibilities

  • Deliver dynamic, student-centered instruction in all GED subject areas, with a focus on mathematics and literacy development
  • Create a creative, engaging, and supportive classroom environment for adults and out-of-school youth
  • Develop and implement lesson plans tailored to varying student skill levels, learning styles, and interests
  • Prepare students for GED subtests through targeted instruction, skill-building, and test-taking strategies
  • Assign and review classwork and homework to reinforce learning objectives and foundational skills
  • Utilize positive youth development and adult learning principles to support student persistence and achievement
  • Maintain a structured, respectful classroom culture with clear expectations and routines
  • Design and administer weekly formative assessments to evaluate student progress and mastery of benchmark skills
  • Analyze assessment data to inform lesson planning, differentiate instruction, and support student outcomes
  • Track student progress toward measurable goals, including TABE gains, GED readiness, and credential attainment
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant data entry in all required systems (e.g., attendance, case notes, assessments, outcomes)
  • Ensure data integrity by regularly reviewing entries for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with program standards
  • Serve as the point person for instructional data quality and reporting compliance
  • Monitor and support adherence to funder requirements related to documentation, assessments, and outcomes
  • Collaborate with program leadership to prepare monthly reports and performance updates
  • Conduct routine internal audits of instructional and student data to identify gaps and implement corrective actions
  • Provide guidance and support to other instructional staff, including modeling best practices in teaching and data management
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and coaching sessions to continuously improve instructional quality
  • Collaborate with case managers and support staff to address student academic and socio-emotional needs
  • Contribute to curriculum development and continuous program improvement efforts
  • Foster an inclusive environment that respects and values individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Participate in staff meetings and 14 hours of mandatory RAEN-Led professional development trainings.
  • Collaborate with program staff to ensure high-quality programming and a positive participant experience.
  • Build employer and community partnerships, collaborate with workforce system partners
  • Support job placement opportunities
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information, including educational, social and emotional records
  • Utilize Microsoft Office and data systems effectively to support instruction and reporting
  • Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and organizational protocols
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by program leadership
