About The Position

The Level 4 Windows System Administrator is a senior-level position responsible for strategic planning, design, and maintenance of the organization’s Windows Server infrastructure across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments. The administrator maintains smooth operation of multi-user computer systems, coordinates with network administrators, supports users, evaluates vendor products, recommends hardware and software purchases, coordinates installations, and provides backup and recovery. The role also includes developing and monitoring policies and standards for computing-resource allocation and may involve setting up administrator and service accounts, maintaining system documentation, tuning performance, installing system-wide software, and allocating storage. The successful candidate will work independently with minimal supervision, provide technical leadership to junior administrators, and help advance innovation, automation, and security compliance. Responsibilities span complex Windows Server operations, disaster recovery, virtualization, infrastructure design, scripting and automation, security monitoring, and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Requirements

Meet one of the stated education and experience pathways: a bachelor’s degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; a master’s degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; or a Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.
For information technology-related positions, specified alternatives to a bachelor’s degree may qualify, including relevant apprentice, military, associate-degree, high-school/GED, or professional-certification pathways described in the posting.
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
Minimum of 5–7 years of hands-on experience supporting Microsoft Windows Server 2016, 2019, or 2022 in large-scale, complex environments.
Advanced proficiency in Windows Server core services, including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
Demonstrated expertise in virtualization technologies, preferably VMware ESXi and Hyper-V.
Strong practical experience with scripting and automation, especially PowerShell and Python.
Familiarity with server upgrades, data migration tools, and disaster recovery solutions.
Experience with Splunk, Simplivity, and other monitoring and logging tools.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining a Confidential U.S. Security Clearance.
Strong commitment to teamwork and willingness to learn new technologies.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a professional, responsive customer-service manner.
Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work in a fast-paced virtual environment with minimal supervision.
Periodic after-hours work and participation in an on-call rotation are required.

Nice To Haves

Experience with at least one major public cloud platform, such as Azure, AWS, or GCP, for administration of virtual machines or infrastructure services.
Familiarity with monitoring and observability platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, or New Relic.
Working knowledge of configuration-management tools such as Ansible or Puppet, or Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.

Responsibilities

Design, implement, and maintain complex Windows Server infrastructures for high availability, scalability, and performance.
Develop and execute disaster recovery plans, including data backup and restoration procedures.
Coordinate with network administrators and cross-functional teams to integrate Windows systems with networking, storage, security, and other technologies.
Provide expert technical support, resolve complex issues, and escalate problems to vendors or external experts when needed.
Architect and manage large-scale virtualization environments, including VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, and cloud platforms.
Design and implement converged infrastructure solutions, such as Simplivity, to optimize resource use and reduce costs.
Ensure compliance with standards and best practices for virtualization, storage, and networking.
Develop and maintain automation scripts using PowerShell, Python, or other languages.
Design and implement automated deployment solutions for Windows systems, applications, and patches.
Work with development teams to integrate automation scripts with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tools.
Develop and implement security plans to protect Windows systems and data from threats, vulnerabilities, and breaches.
Work with security teams to support compliance with regulations such as HIPAA, PCI-DSS, and SOX.
Design and implement monitoring and logging solutions using Splunk, ELK, or other tools to detect and respond to security incidents.
Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and training to junior administrators.
Collaborate across teams to develop and maintain processes, operational runbooks, and system documentation.
Keep documentation accurate, current, and accessible to relevant stakeholders.
Evaluate vendor products, recommend hardware and software purchases, coordinate installations, and provide backup recovery.
Develop and monitor policies and standards for allocation and use of computing resources.
Perform ancillary administration such as setting up administrator and service accounts, tuning performance, installing system-wide software, and allocating mass storage.
Participate in periodic travel and an on-call rotation; perform periodic after-hours work.
