About The Position

This position serves as the lead supervisory veterinarian for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation, and is the primary wildlife health veterinarian. The role involves leading the division’s Wildlife Health and Veterinary Services Program, which includes a full-time capture veterinarian and multiple other full and part-time staff members. Responsibilities include working with division’s wildlife biologists to survey wildlife health and diagnose diseases and parasites, coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies on animal disease outbreak issues and surveillance of zoonotic or emerging diseases, and developing and recommending mitigation procedures for emerging diseases when necessary. The mission of the Division of Wildlife Conservation is to conserve and enhance Alaska’s wildlife and habitats and provide for a wide range of public uses and benefits. This position contributes to this mission by helping to provide people an opportunity to gain knowledge and appreciation for Alaska’s wildlife, its management, and ways to interact with wildlife safely and ethically.

Requirements

  • Licensure as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine by the State of Alaska
  • Two years of professional experience conducting wildlife management, research, or information and education projects which required field work and handling of big game (such as bear, moose, caribou, deer, wolf, etc.) or marine mammals (such as Steller’s sea lion, walrus, Polar Bear, seal, etc.); or providing veterinary care for free-roaming or captive big game or marine mammals.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • First aid/CPR certification.
  • Maintain Alaska veterinary medicine licenses in good standing.
  • No previous convictions on illicit drug or alcohol-related charges, no previous loss or suspension of veterinary license in any state.
  • Cover Letter highlighting knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience as they pertain to the five position-specific competencies, including interest in the position and addressing each of the five desired competencies.

  • The duties frequently require spending time in the field; working with large and dangerous animals; traveling in small aircraft and boats; adapting methods and practices to the terrain and climate; and may require living in primitive conditions for brief periods.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies on animal disease outbreak issues and surveillance of zoonotic or emerging diseases, including serving as the primary liaison with the Alaska State Veterinarian, Department of Health, and federal agencies on domestic animal and human health issues related to wildlife
  • Developing and recommending mitigation procedures for emerging diseases when necessary
