About The Position

As our Wildlife Area Technicians, you will play a vital role in maintaining public access, improving wildlife habitat, supporting recreation opportunities, and implementing projects that contribute to healthy and diverse ecosystems across WDFW’s Columbia Wildlife Area. These positions offer the opportunity to work outdoors while contributing to conservation efforts by implementing Wildlife Area Projects that protect, enhance, and restore habitat, support wildlife species, and maintain recreational opportunities. Envision yourself out in the field carrying out vegetation management activities and performing technical tasks to maintain wildlife area facilities, equipment, and infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience in habitat management, land management, agriculture, or natural resource operations.
  • An Associate’s degree in natural resource management, forestry, wildlife management, agriculture, environmental science, or a closely related field.
  • One (1) year of experience as a Natural Resource Technician 2.
  • Six (6) months of experience operating equipment such as vehicles, ATV’s or trailers.
  • Six (6) months of experience with using hand and power tools in outdoor fieldwork, construction, or habitat work settings.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

  • Bachelor’s degree with major study in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat management, agriculture, forestry, or natural resource science.
  • Public Pesticide Applicator License.
  • Agricultural practices and equipment.
  • Planning and coordinating annual agricultural crop establishment.
  • Identifying Eastern Washington native plant species.
  • Operating heavy equipment such as excavators, graders, or large agricultural machinery.
  • Maintaining or managing irrigation systems.
  • Conducting wildlife monitoring, surveys, or data collection.
  • Delivering public outreach, education, or hunter access programs.
  • Knowledge of: Wildlife agricultural enhancement programs and farming practices.
  • Wildlife habitat enhancement and restoration.
  • Basics of carpentry, mechanical and facility repair.
  • Small, large, and heavy equipment operation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.
  • Small engine tools such as pumps, chainsaws, and brush cutters.
  • Computer software – Microsoft Office, Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS).
  • Managing projects and workloads.
  • Safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain capital facilities, wildlife area infrastructure, vehicles, and equipment: Maintain Wildlife Area buildings, information kiosks and signage, and irrigation systems.
  • Assist and oversee the implementation of capital improvement projects.
  • Maintain roads, culverts, gates, fences, parking lots and other capital improvements.
  • Maintain wildlife area vehicles, equipment, and maintenance records.
  • Monitor, assess and ensure safety of Wildlife Area facilities and equipment.
  • Plan, coordinate and implement projects to protect, maintain, and improve habitats, species, and recreational opportunities on the Wildlife Area: Implement Wildlife Area projects - restore, enhance, and maintain wildlife habitats.
  • Implement Integrated Pest Management plan and apply herbicides as needed.
  • Conduct agricultural activities such as mowing, disking, seeding, and trimming trees.
  • Operate a variety of small and heavy equipment including brush cutters, chainsaws ATVs, UTV’s, tractors, and excavators.
  • Inspect, manage, and maintain access areas and public use resources on the wildlife area to ensure the health and safety of the public, compliance, and the aesthetics of the wildlife area.
  • Communicate with the public during field work, via email, telephone, and at public meetings.
