About The Position

The Wyoming State Forestry Division is hiring a seasonal Wildland Fire Suppression Squad Boss to lead a wildland firefighting crew responsible for fire suppression, management, and control. The work may include fire preparedness, suppression, and fuels management. The Squad Boss leads crew members and uses specialized tools, equipment, and techniques to suppress fires. Duties include scouting fires and gathering information about hazards, camps, water supplies, cargo drop locations, fuel concentrations, helicopter landing sites, fire direction, and fire spread intensity. The position also maintains firefighting tools and equipment, manages inventories and records, and arranges for equipment replacement, reconditioning, and storage at the end of the fire season. The role receives and records reports of isolated small fires, plans suppression methods and equipment needs, and determines routes of travel. It locates, suppresses, and manages fires—often in timbered or mountainous terrain—using knowledge of fire behavior and local topography, as well as hand and power tools. Firefighting activities may include felling trees or snags, operating pumps, building fire lines, burning out, backfiring, mopping up, and patrolling lines. The position also supports fire prevention by helping recruit and organize local volunteer emergency firefighting crews, issuing equipment, and training cooperators in basic firefighting techniques and equipment use. This is a seasonal, hourly, non-exempt position. Housing is available. Additional benefits may be available depending on the length of the season.
