The Wildland Fire Captain Driver Operator (CDO) is responsible for overseeing all operations on a Type 6 or Type 7 engine, ensuring a safe working environment for customers. This role involves documenting daily activities, accurately completing timecards, and communicating operational objectives to Battalion Chiefs. The CDO provides essential services to Public Utility Companies, including fire watch and extinguishment, EMS, fire weather updates, and safety briefings. Travel is required for this position, and the role includes developing and directing drills and training programs, as well as participating in customer relations events. Understanding the chain of command is crucial. While a typical shift is from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm, 12+ hour shifts are common, and Red Flag Warning periods may require up to 72-hour shifts. The CDO is the driver operator, typically for a Type 6 engine, and may act as a Battalion Chief when needed. The position requires the ability to work any assigned shift, including nights, holidays, and weekends, and involves supervising the safe operation of company vehicles and equipment, conducting performance evaluations, and using iPads with associated applications.
