About The Position

Community of Hope is seeking a WIC Nutrition Assistant to provide nutrition and customer support services to WIC participants. This role involves health screenings, referrals to healthcare and community resources, basic nutrition education and counseling, and food package prescription. The WIC Nutrition Assistant will ensure compliance with WIC program requirements while delivering high-quality, participant-centered customer service. This is a temporary position based out of our Conway Health & Resource Center in SW, Washington, DC.

Requirements

  • High school degree or GED required.
  • At least one year of experience working in a medical office. Or at least one year performing the duties of a Nutrition Assistant/Aide in a local WIC agency.
  • The ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • The ability to establish rapport with individuals and small groups.
  • Successful completion of WIC paraprofessional training program within one year of appointment to the position.
  • Proof of vaccinations. COH will consider requests for reasonable accommodations for anyone who cannot be vaccinated for a religious or medical reason, subject to applicable law.

Nice To Haves

  • LPNs, Dietetic Technicians with a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience in community health center setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provides WIC Program participant services including scheduling appointments, updating demographic data and responding to calls.
  • Interviews to obtain basic demographic data such as name, address, and contact information; verifying identity, residency, and income eligibility by reviewing paperwork presented; entering all data into HANDS.
  • Performs initial health assessments using a standard assessment tool, provides basic nutrition education, assigns standard food packages and provides appropriate referrals.
  • Ensures nutrition assessment (certification and mid-certification) includes diet and health assessment, risk assignment, food package tailoring, nutrition education, documentation and establishing health or nutrition goals with participant.
  • Collects and enters information for the certification process that includes anthropometric and hematological data collection and plotting on the appropriate growth chart.
  • Provides and documents general participant-centered nutrition education including individual/family sessions and facilitated group discussions (low risk participants preferably).
  • Educates applicants regarding their rights and responsibilities, including the food delivery system, WIC foods, and certification schedule.
  • Documents assessments and nutrition education in HANDS in accordance with WIC policy and training.
  • Assists with coordination of WIC services, including breastfeeding promotion and support, making referrals as warranted and helping with outreach activities.
  • Provides and documents referrals to health and social service programs and appropriate documentation of follow-up.
  • Documents participant contacts as outlined in the WIC Nutrition Services Documentation Guidance to ensure continuity of care, including identifying where participants are in the process of change, agreed upon goals and other pertinent information essential for supporting participants.
  • Promotes breastfeeding as the normal infant feeding method.
  • Identifies and refers (yields) participants to Nutritionist, CPA when an issue or concern is beyond the established scope of practice.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by supervisor.
