The WIC Health and Nutrition Educator serves as a nutrition counselor and health educator. The WIC Health and Nutrition Educator functions as a competent professional authority to facilitate patient-centered goal-setting for nutritional balance and healthy lifestyles for the patients. They adhere to the mandates of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program duties in accordance with USDA Regulations and State and Local Agency Policies and Procedures. The WIC Health and Nutrition Educator determines medical/nutritional risks and prescribes supplemental foods as part of the WIC program. Performs nutrition assessments and determines nutritional risk factors in clients applying for WIC. Develops care plans and provides appropriate counseling and follow-up on nutrition during pregnancy, lactation, post-partum, and infancy/early childhood. Properly documents all services provided. Provides nutritional counseling both individually and in groups. Helps maintain a smooth patient flow through the WIC office. Promotes breastfeeding by educating WIC clients on the benefits and basics of breastfeeding and pump use. Provides breastfeeding education for staff and organizes breastfeeding support for clients. Assists in scheduling and enrolling clients in the WIC program and completing duties for certification and food benefit issuance as needed. Designs informational materials and serves as a nutrition resource for WIC clients, health department staff, and the community. Provides nutrition services to OWCHC and DCHD clients, staff, and community residents. Plans and participates in community health education programs.
