About The Position

The WIC Certifier I is responsible for determining WIC eligibility, scheduling potential participants and enrolling when qualified. External contacts include patients, families, physicians and outside organizations and agencies. This position may work in any clinic location operated by MHS WIC Services across Pierce County, use of personal vehicle is required. The role involves communicating in person and remotely with participants in a sensitive manner regarding lifestyle, medical history, nutritional practices and income, evaluating income and health risks to determine participant program eligibility, and utilizing motivational interviewing techniques. The WIC Certifier I uses participant-centered techniques to provide personalized nutrition education/referrals and to educate pregnant women on how to initiate and sustain breastfeeding and to help breastfeeding clients solve common breastfeeding problems. They also assess participants’ health and nutrition status using Washington State WIC Assessment Questions and perform clerical tasks, including answering phones, prequalifying prospective clients, scheduling appointments, and making reminder calls. The incumbent may be required to work in any MBWIC clinic in Pierce County or participate in local outreach events.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED
Recognized as a Competent Professional Authority by Washington State Department of Health or able to qualify through on-the-job WIC Certifier training within 1 year of hire

Responsibilities
