About The Position

The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor provides encouragement, education, and peer support to pregnant and breastfeeding women participating in the WIC program. Through one-on-one counseling, telephone support, and group education, this role helps families meet their breastfeeding goals while connecting participants with additional resources when needed. The Peer Counselor works closely with the WIC team to promote positive health outcomes for women, infants, and children.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current or former WIC participant who has breastfed for at least six months.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and build positive relationships with participants and community partners.
  • Basic computer and data entry skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide breastfeeding education, encouragement, and support to pregnant and postpartum participants through in-person and telephone contacts.
  • Manage an assigned caseload and develop individualized follow-up plans to meet WIC program requirements.
  • Monitor and maintain breast pump and breastfeeding supply inventory.
  • Refer participants to the Clinic Supervisor, Breastfeeding Coordinator, or Nutrition staff when needs fall outside the scope of the role.
  • Maintain accurate participant documentation and complete required data entry.
  • Assist with clinic operations, including answering phones, scheduling appointments, and providing program information.
  • Collaborate with the WIC team to support efficient clinic operations and positive participant experiences.
  • Travel to other WIC clinic locations as needed to provide coverage.
  • Maintain compliance with agency, state, and federal policies while promoting quality improvement, safety, and cultural diversity.
