About The Position

The Student Wellbeing Office at Rice University supports student development and success by providing case management, outreach, and programming in the campus community. The Student Wellbeing Office is a good first point of contact for students who want to talk to someone about solutions to their well-being and mental health concerns or may need resource coordination between on- and off-campus services. The office provides case management support for undergraduate and full-time graduate students, including helping students interested in taking time off, coordinating resource navigation, providing on-campus referrals, and referring to the Rice Counseling Center. The Student Wellbeing Office also provides psychoeducation across a variety of well-being topics, developed by assessing campus needs and trends in mental health in higher education, and performs outreach to both undergraduate and graduate students at Rice. The office works with other departments across Rice to provide resources, outreach, and overall well-being support for Rice students. The Student Wellbeing Office is seeking a full-time Wellbeing Advisor - Outreach Specialist. This position will provide in-person outreach programming in the areas of mental health awareness, psychoeducation, and skills training. This position will include outreach and programming as key components, with a focus on outreach performed in the evenings, when students are most active outside the classroom. This position will also provide individual case management for Rice students, and consultations on mental health and administrative issues for faculty, staff, students, and student family members when necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in public health, counseling, social work, or another related field
  • 1+ years of experience in providing well-being education/community-level social services or well-being case management
  • Outreach specialist — experience developing, executing, and evaluating outreach programs
  • Knowledge of education/community-level social services and case management for a diverse young adult population
  • Experience with outreach to communities, college campuses, or groups
  • Multicultural competence
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and judgment
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities
  • Proactivity in developing relationships, collaborations, and information to develop initiatives to suit the needs of campus
  • Computer literacy — specifically Canva, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Google Drive, and Zoom
  • Ability to work flexible hours and adapt to the needs of the Residential Colleges, Graduate Departments, and the greater campus community

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in public health, counseling, social work, or another related field
  • Eligibility for a Texas license in professional counseling or social work (LPC, LCSW, or LMSW)
  • One or more years of experience providing well-being education/community-level social services or well-being case management to a culturally diverse young adult population (includes experience gained in internships and/or other related pre-master’s experience)
  • Experience facilitating psychoeducational groups
  • Experience as a high school or college-level counselor/case manager

Responsibilities

  • Assists in creating and delivering mental health outreach programming/community-level social services for Rice students, faculty, staff, and their families based on the current needs of the university
  • Attends residential college events, student government events, and meetings; hosts outreach events in residential colleges, graduate housing, and academic departments in the evening
  • Responsible for attending community meetings both at Rice and in the greater Houston area
  • Assists in providing case management and well-being advising for students whose behavior, academic progress, or mental or physical impairment indicates a need for assistance; identifies students’ problems and arranges for needed services, both on and off campus
  • Seeks appropriate consultation from supervisors and colleagues when necessary
  • Provides basic well-being advice, guidance, case management, and information for students in distress
  • Maintains case history and programming records and prepares reports when necessary
  • Employees may be assigned or required to perform additional duties for the benefit of the department or the university
  • Maintains continuing education for licensure, if applicable
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
  • Participates in after-hours student group meetings and campus events
  • Designs marketing strategies, graphic materials, and aids in the maintenance of social media
  • Advises student organizations and student leaders, as needed
  • Identifies students’ problems and arranges for needed services, both on and off campus
  • Advises students concerning academic performance and academic success opportunities
  • Provides student crisis management, as needed
