ATDM Welding Instructor
About The Position
The Welding Instructor will deliver hands-on welding instruction in a fast-paced workforce training environment. This role is responsible for preparing students for careers in advanced manufacturing by teaching welding fundamentals, industry best practices, and practical applications aligned with employer needs. As a Welding Instructor, you will help build the skilled workforce needed by manufacturers throughout Virginia and the nation. Through engaging instruction and mentorship, you will prepare students to enter high-demand careers with the technical skills, professionalism, and confidence needed to succeed. You will also collaborate with fellow instructors and program leadership to maintain the high-quality training experience that has become a hallmark of IALR's advanced manufacturing programs.
Requirements
- Minimum of five (5) years of industry experience in welding, fabrication, or a related manufacturing field.
- Minimum of two (2) years of teaching, workforce training, apprenticeship instruction, technical education, or structured on-the-job training experience.
- Experience with SMAW, GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), and FCAW welding processes.
- Experience welding carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other industrial materials.
- Competency in welding safety practices, blueprint interpretation, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings.
- Competency in technical mathematics and measurements used in welding and fabrication.
- Experience with welding inspection methods, quality standards, and precision measurement tools.
- Knowledge of American Welding Society (AWS) standards and industry best practices.
- Experience setting up, operating, and maintaining welding equipment.
- Experience assessing learning outcomes and student performance.
- Experience developing or updating technical curriculum and training materials.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to diverse learners.
- Ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, and industry partners.
- Eligibility to access controlled unclassified information (CUI) and export controlled data, and candidates must meet applicable federal requirements, including U.S. person status where required.
Nice To Haves
- American Welding Society (AWS) certifications.
- Experience developing training materials or curriculum.
- Five or more years of welding industry experience.
- Experience in workforce development, technical education, apprenticeship, military, or industrial training programs.
- Familiarity with modern welding technologies and manufacturing practices.
Responsibilities
- Provide classroom and laboratory instruction in welding processes and techniques.
- Teach welding safety standards and safe equipment operation.
- Deliver training in SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, and related welding applications.
- Teach blueprint reading, fabrication, technical mathematics, and quality requirements.
- Evaluate student performance and provide coaching to support student success.
- Maintain welding equipment, tools, and instructional materials.
- Ensure a safe, organized, and productive learning environment.
- Assist with curriculum enhancements and continuous program improvement.
- Support workforce training initiatives and industry partnerships.
