About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin’s Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops lunar landers and related products. The Welding Engineer will help build the Materials and Processes (M&P) Engineering division and support lunar hardware from design through manufacturing and processing, helping ensure spacecraft requirements are met safely and repeatably. The role focuses on developing and qualifying fusion and solid-state welding processes, coordinating with design, manufacturing, quality, and suppliers, and supporting production welding and non-conformance dispositions. Travel of less than 25% may be required to support manufacturing and supplier efforts. Final role level will be based on overall experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in aerospace engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, welding engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in materials engineering or a related field.
  • Experience with fusion welding processes such as VPPA, GTAW, or electron-beam welding, and with solid-state welding processes.
  • Experience welding aluminum, titanium, and/or nickel alloys.
  • Experience supporting design and manufacturing teams in an aerospace environment, including preparing specifications, test reports, and design substantiation documentation.
  • Familiarity with nondestructive inspection methods, including visual, dye penetrant, eddy current, radiography, ultrasonic, and computed tomography inspections.
  • Familiarity with destructive testing, including tensile, shear, fracture toughness, crack growth, and fatigue testing.
  • Experience with welding standards such as AWS, ASME, or MIL standards.
  • Experience working with aerospace suppliers, including on-site engineering audits, technical interchanges, supplier qualifications, and statistical process controls.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage small and large projects for a diverse range of customers.
  • Experience interpreting, meeting, and verifying internal and external regulatory requirements for an engineered product.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (current Green Card holder).

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in aerospace, materials science, mechanical, manufacturing, welding, or a related engineering field.
  • Familiarity with NASA standards such as NASA-STD-5009, NASA-STD-6016, and MSFC-SPEC-3679.
  • Ability to develop engineering requirements for undefined material forms and processes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in aerospace structural metals and/or welding processes.
  • Experience with statistical treatment of test data and generation of design values.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and qualify fusion and solid-state welding processes for lunar hardware applications.
  • Work with cross-functional teams selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers for aerospace hardware.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to define material requirements and implement production solutions.
  • Develop and define internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation and implementation.
  • Ensure Materials and Processes design requirements are met by reviewing and refining part designs, drawings, and manufacturing controls.
  • Support production welding, including material review board (MRB) and similar non-conformance dispositions.
  • Travel less than 25% to support manufacturing and supplier efforts.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 5%.
