Materials Process Engineer

Diamond Foundry•Bay Area, California, CA
•$105,000 - $125,000•Onsite

About The Position

Diamond Foundry is hiring a Materials Process Engineer to help develop and scale processes for a proprietary advanced material used in diamond manufacturing. The role involves hands-on work across molding and extrusion, characterization of material properties, and engineering interfaces between the material and diamond and glass substrates. The engineer will help take a novel material from laboratory experiments to high-volume production while working with laser, optical, and manufacturing engineers. The position is based in Fremont, California, and requires on-site work five days per week. It is described as an entry-level opportunity for candidates with 0–2 years of experience, including internships. Compensation is $105,000–$125,000 per year, with eligibility for company shares; actual compensation may vary based on factors including duties, experience, and location. Higher-level candidates may also be considered, with salary adjusted accordingly.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Entry-level experience of 0–2 years; internships are included.
  • Internship or direct laboratory experience in glass characterization or molding, ideally involving chalcogenide or other specialty glasses.
  • Familiarity with moderate-temperature processing such as glass or polymer molding and extrusion, surface treatment, and safe handling of toxic materials.
  • Experience characterizing thermal, optical, and structural properties using methods such as DSC, viscometry, UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, or SEM/EDS.
  • Experience using designed experiments and analyzing data with JMP, Python, or Google Sheets.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with chalcogenide or other specialty glasses.

Responsibilities

  • Run moderate-temperature molding processes and help design and fabricate molds, tuning temperature, pressure, and surface finish to reduce defects.
  • Run extrusion trials and measure how temperature, pressure, and die design affect flow, surface quality, and dimensional consistency.
  • Characterize thermal, optical, and flow properties before and after processing, and track how they change over reuse cycles.
  • Clean and functionalize diamond and glass substrate surfaces, including through plasma treatment, and evaluate adhesion and interface quality.
  • Run designed experiments and translate results into process improvements.
  • Document process improvements in SOPs and follow EHS practices for toxic materials.

Benefits

  • Eligible employees may enroll in health insurance, flexible spending accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and programs providing paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Employee discounts to VRAI.
  • Benefits begin as early as the first day of employment. Medical and vision coverage are retroactive to the start date; dental and voluntary benefits take effect after enrollment is completed.
  • Eligible for company shares.
