About The Position

This role involves performing welding tasks on ship components, preparing work surfaces, and ensuring quality welds according to specifications. The position requires working in various environments, including aloft and in confined spaces, and collaborating with other trades to complete vessel construction or repair. On-site training is provided.

Requirements

  • Understand weld symbols.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of various metals characteristics and qualities including the correct welding processes required and the effects of welding on the material.
  • Ability to inspect completed welds for conformance to specifications and know how to correct defects when necessary.
  • Will be required to work aloft (on scaffold or on manlifts) and in confined spaces.
  • "U.S. Person" status is required, defined as U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents (green card holders), and certain protected classes of asylees and refugees.

Responsibilities

  • Read, interpret, and follow blueprints and sketches to understand the specifications of a project.
  • Efficiently and safely perform welding tasks using various welding processes and equipment.
  • Properly use weld measurement tools and gauges.
  • Inspect completed welds for conformance to specifications and correct defects when necessary.
  • Complete carbon steel, aluminum, and stainless steel fillet and butt weld certifications using the SMAW (Stick), GMAW (MIG), FCAW (Flux Core), and GMAW-P process (multi-pass) in 3G and 4G positions.
  • Complete stainless steel, Cupro-Nickel, and carbon steel pipe welds (6G).
  • Self-assess quality of work to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Perform routine maintenance on welding equipment and tools.
  • Perform structural welding on ship components such as hulls, decks, bulkheads, frames, and foundations.
  • Prepare work surfaces by grinding, cutting, and cleaning to ensure quality welds.
  • Perform grinding, cutting, torching, and pick up work as needed.
  • Conduct weld fit-up and tacking according to engineering specifications and welding best practices.
  • Work in various positions, including overhead, vertical, and flat welding, often in tight or elevated spaces.
  • Inspect all equipment daily (torch, torch hoses, grinder, levels, tapes, etc.).
  • Follow all shipyard safety policies, including proper use of PPE, fire prevention, and confined space protocols.
  • Assist in the training and development of junior welders.
  • Collaborate and communicate with welders, metal fitters, pipefitters, electricians, and other trades as required to complete vessel construction or repair and to maintain efficient work flows.
  • Work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced ship production environment.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Maintain a positive attitude toward customers and represent Saronic professionally.
  • Make a personal commitment and be accountable for HSE results, driving toward the achievement of defined goals.
  • Ensure welding performance is subject to successfully passing all NDT requirements as set forth by classification society.
