The Motor Equipment Metal Mechanic (Motor Vehicle Body Repairer) repairs damaged bodies and body parts of automotive vehicles, such as automobiles, buses, and light trucks according to repair manuals, using hand tools and power tools. This role involves removing upholstery, accessories, and electrical/hydraulic components to access vehicle body and fender areas. The mechanic will use hammers to remove dents, fill depressions with solder or plastic material, and remove damaged fenders, panels, and grills using wrenches and cutting torches. They will also bolt or weld replacement parts, straighten bent frames, and file, grind, and sand repaired surfaces. Refinishing may involve using a paint spray gun and sander, aiming headlights, aligning wheels, and bleeding hydraulic brake systems. Assignments may include planning and conducting projects of limited scope or portions of larger projects, with objectives and design approaches outlined by a supervisor. Completed work is reviewed for technical adequacy. The role may involve planning schedules and assisting with directing lower-level technicians, as well as training them. Duties are varied and include performing journeyman welding in maintenance and repair shops on parts and bodies for mobile industrial equipment. This includes planning, laying out, fabricating, assembling, installing, and repairing metal body parts for reconditioning and modifying mobile and non-mobile equipment. The position also involves modifying body parts, installing items like cabs, cowls, aprons, doors, bodies, hoods, and various metal containers and frames based on work order requests. Coordination, on-the-job assistance, and limited technical direction to employees performing similar work are expected. Planning and scheduling work from authorized work orders, and performing quality assurance and quality control functions are also key responsibilities. Routine and non-routine troubleshooting and problem identification/resolution are required. The role also involves responding to various types of emergencies and providing assistance as appropriate. All other position-related duties as assigned or requested are part of the role.
