About The Position

Welder uses engineering drawings to build parts and equipment to drawing specifications. The work includes layout, tack-up, welding using GMAW and GTAW processes, and straightening as needed to meet dimensional and quality specifications on material ranging from 20 gauge to 3/4 inch thick. Welders use tools such as clamps, pneumatic and electrical grinders, and oxy-acetylene torches. The role has five levels of responsibility, with duties and demonstrated capabilities increasing by level. Applicants must pass a written test and a weld demonstration appropriate to the level of work.

  • Apply commonsense understanding to written, oral, blueprint, or diagram instructions and address problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • High school diploma or GED and beginning computer skills.
  • Level 2: 1.5 to 2.5 years of industrial welding experience and skill demonstrated by weld testing.
  • Level 3: 2.5 to 3.5 years of industrial welding experience and skill demonstrated by weld testing.
  • Level 4: 4.5 to 5.5 years of industrial welding experience and skill demonstrated by weld testing.
  • Level 5: 6.5 to 7.5 years of industrial welding experience and skill demonstrated by weld testing.

  • Measure component dimensions to determine the accuracy of welding operations.
  • Operate basic equipment, including pneumatic and electrical grinders, acetylene torches, and plasma torches, with little supervision.
  • Lay out, tack up, and weld simple equipment and components.
  • Assist other welders with more complex equipment and components.
  • Improve consistency in weld quality and efficiency in meeting productivity expectations measured against labor standards.
  • Identify and repair weld defects in accordance with quality standards.
  • Make welds to applicable standards for arm brackets, recognize and apply weld symbols, and use the stud gun process, as applicable to level.
  • Read complex blueprints and support screen welding; weld vibratory and/or optical equipment, as applicable to level.
  • Resolve issues independently on complex assignments and demonstrate capability to weld items throughout a particular area, with cross-training in at least one area, as applicable to level.
  • Demonstrate the ability and interest to weld any item, as applicable to level.
