Newport News Shipbuilding is hiring entry-level welders and provides training; no prior experience is needed. New hires first qualify through the shipyard’s Welding School. After completing the school, welders perform structural and/or pipe welding throughout ship construction, including work on aircraft carriers and submarines. The role uses a range of welding filler metals and processes, including SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW, to perform tack, fillet, and full-penetration welds on steel foundations and structural and pipe joints. Work is performed in all positions using manual and mechanized processes, and welds must meet nondestructive testing requirements, including visual, magnetic-particle, ultrasonic, and radiographic inspection. Additional training includes certified visual inspection, fire watch, carbon arcing, and troubleshooting minor welding-equipment problems. The position requires working the assigned shift based on production needs, in indoor and outdoor environments and in all weather conditions. Welders may work at extreme heights or in confined spaces and perform overhead work. Overtime may be required. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, pass a Physical Agility Test and respirator fit test, and undergo a background investigation and drug screen.
