About The Position

An “A” Mechanic at Sims Metal is a highly skilled technician responsible for diagnosing and repairing most issues related to mobile equipment. This role demands extensive knowledge and significant hands-on experience in repairing internal combustion engines, transmissions, electrical, and hydraulic systems. The "A" Mechanic operates independently to diagnose, identify, repair, and return equipment to service, demonstrating a strong sense of responsibility for the performance and upkeep of the mobile equipment fleet. To qualify for this level, candidates must possess full mastery of all skill sets and competencies required of both “B” and “C” Mechanics. Responsibilities

  • Rebuild major components — including engines, transmissions, pumps, cylinders, motors, and electrical systems — to manufacturer specifications.
  • Diagnose causes of failure and implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Safely and properly operate torches, presses, pullers, winches, jacks, lifts, and other mechanical devices within their rated capacities.
  • Use appropriate tools for each repair and demonstrate proficiency in their proper use.
  • Apply advanced diagnostic tools such as multimeters, computers, gauges, probes, scopes, calipers, and other measurement instruments.
  • Direct, mentor, and take responsibility for “B” and “C” Mechanics assisting with repair work.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, outside dealers, and technicians regarding equipment issues, repairs, and recommendations.
