About The Position

Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Cleveland, Texas. The Car Repairman is responsible for performing welding and mechanical repairs on tank cars, ensuring structural integrity, safety, and quality while following established procedures and working in a physically demanding industrial environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test
  • Must pass the applicable welding test as prescribed by the company
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and assembly documents
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work any shift, including overtime, as permitted by the union contract
  • Dependable attendance and reliability

  • Experience in an Industrial Repair or Manufacturing environment.

  • Valve and fittings experience
  • Tank car knowledge or experience

Responsibilities

  • Welds components related to tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, side sills, etc.
  • Performs welded repairs by utilizing air arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment.
  • Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind weld, slag or spatter.
  • Repairs, straightens, removes, reworks car parts, brakes, underframes, center plates, gears, couplers, valves, etc. using various hand and power tools.
  • Performs welding and mechanical repairs to tank and hopper cars when required.
  • Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner and reports potential hazards.
