About The Position

Valkyrie Enterprises is seeking a Welder II to play a key role in welding on Naval Ships. This position is located in Norfolk, Virginia. The Welder II will be responsible for reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and rough sketches, and using these to plan welding operations while ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards. A strong understanding of welding symbols per MIL-STD 22D is required. The role involves providing skilled welding services on various materials including steel and aluminum piping, structural shapes, and specific alloys like CS, CuNi, NiCu, and stainless-steel piping for vessel repair and modification. Responsibilities include fabricating templates, setting up and using burning/heating torches and plasma cutters, and working collaboratively in a team environment. The Welder II will also mentor junior welders on drawing interpretation, joint design, welding techniques (including mirror welding), and oversee the progression of junior welder workmanship inspectors. Willingness to learn documentation of fit-up, welds, and workmanship inspections is essential. Compliance with all OSHA, shipyard safety, and environmental policies and procedures is mandatory. Travel to off-site jobsites may be required, potentially involving company vehicle use. The role may also require working beyond standard hours, including weekends, and performing Fire watch duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 5 years of experience in the field.
  • Must pass weld qualifications (2G, 3G, & 4G) SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding).
  • Must pass weld qualifications (GMAW - Gas Metal Arc Welding process).
  • Must meet NAVSEA 248 requirements by passing MIL-STD 1689 T9074-AR-GIB-010-278 Weld Workmanship requirements.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
  • Must meet REAL ID requirements for base and travel access.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous welding certification and experience with GMAW Aluminum and SMAW, preferred.
  • Previous brazing experience preferred.
  • Previous TIG experience preferred.
  • Previous FCAW experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and rough sketches.
  • Use drawings and specifications to plan welding operations.
  • Ensure that work is in accordance with relevant codes and standards.
  • Understand and interpret welding symbols IAW MIL-STD 22D.
  • Provide a broad range of skilled welding services on steel and aluminum piping, structural shapes, and CS, CuNi, NiCu, and stainless‑steel piping for the repair or modification of vessels and related equipment.
  • Locate and mark reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines.
  • Fabricate templates for bending, shaping, and bracing metal structures.
  • Set-up and use of portable burning/heating torches and plasma cutters.
  • Work well with others in a team environment.
  • Mentor junior welders in drawing interpretation, joint design requirements, specific welding technique (mirror welding) and processes.
  • Oversee the progression of junior welder workmanship inspectors.
  • Willing to learn documentation of fit-up, welds and workmanship inspections.
  • Comply with all OSHA, shipyard safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • May be required to travel to jobsites away from Shipyard and utilize company vehicle.
  • May be required to work more than the standard work week, including weekends.
  • Perform Fire watch duties.
