About The Position

Assists welder in all aspects of track maintenance welding work; specifically assists in alignment and setup of rail for bond welding as well as finish grinding; assists in setup for frog, switch point, and rail end welding.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense, understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems in-volving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must have Class B commercial driver's license, motor car permit, FRA 213.7 A & B certification, and Roadway Worker Safety certification.
  • Upon employment, new hire must successfully complete and pass all FEC Rules Classes: Safety, Operating, and Roadway Worker.
  • Must complete all requirements to obtain FRA A & B certifications and pass test within 60 days.

Responsibilities

  • Holds, positions, and reads tape or rods to assist in layout.
  • Places and moves wedges, braces, and jigs to hold rail and parts.
  • Hammers wedges and drift pins, and turns turnbuckles.
  • Pulls pry bars to align parts.
  • Grinds or chips rough edges, surplus weld, or scale.
  • Positions and turns clamps, and bolts together butt straps or parts.
  • Transports and furnishes welder with materials, tools, and supplies.
  • Cleans work area, machines, tools, and equipment.
  • Uses torch to cut and shape metal, as directed.
  • Performs other routine duties.
