About The Position

This role involves fitting and welding steel components to support Site Services and Production. The Welder Fitter will maintain jigs and fixtures, construct keel stands, cradles, and other assemblies for launch activities. Responsibilities also include performing basic carpentry, leveling and blocking jigs, and ensuring overall safe work practices in compliance with Austal USA or industry standards. The position requires maintaining a clean worksite, conserving consumables, and assisting other employees. The individual will monitor the working environment for quality, safety, environmental, and health regulations, reporting deficiencies to their supervisor. Support for other Site Services activities, such as moving equipment and materials, cleaning, landscaping, and assisting with vessel launching, mooring, loading, and departure, is also expected. The role requires adherence to Austal's employee handbook and company policies.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years’ experience fitting or welding steel
  • AWS Certified D1.1
  • Previous shipyard experience
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide
  • Ability to measure using the Metric and English system
  • Able to receive and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to work as part of a team and within assigned roles
  • 18 years of age or older at time of application
  • Able to provide proof of US Person Status
  • No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
  • No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen
  • Willing to submit to a background check
  • Familiar with use and function of power, hand tools and welding machines

  • Experience with ship launching and blocking

Responsibilities

  • Fit and weld steel components for Site Services to support Production.
  • Maintain jigs and other fixtures onsite.
  • Fit and weld keel stands, cradles and other assemblies to support launch activities.
  • Perform basic carpentry work.
  • Level and block jigs to support construction of the vessel.
  • Maintain overall safe work practices and adhere to safety policies and procedures carrying all tasks to the highest standards.
  • Ensure correct construction procedures are adhered to in compliance with Austal USA or industry standards and specifications.
  • Maintain housekeeping, keep worksite free of rubbish, keep materials and equipment stowed in an orderly manner.
  • Conserve waste of consumables and other material.
  • Be accountable for completion of daily work assignments.
  • Assist/work with Production and Site Services employees.
  • Monitor working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental and health regulations and report deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Support all other Site Services activities as required including but not limited to moving equipment, moving material, moving furniture, cleaning the site, cleaning the vessel, lawn and landscaping services, etc.
  • Provide other assistance as directing during launching, mooring, loading and departure of vessels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
  • Comply with Austal’s employee handbook general guidelines, company procedures and policies.
