About The Position

This position involves independently laying out, fitting, assembling, tacking, and welding structural steel components used in overhead crane manufacturing. The role requires producing quality welds that meet drawing, procedure, and inspection requirements on the first pass with minimal repair or rework. The Welder Fitter III will read and interpret fabrication drawings, engineering specifications, weld symbols, and work instructions, while maintaining dimensional accuracy and drawing tolerances. This role also involves determining and applying appropriate fit-up, welding sequence, fixturing, and bracing methods to minimize distortion, and conducting visual inspections of fit-up and completed welds. The position operates fabrication tools, welding equipment, overhead cranes, forklifts, and material handling equipment, and assists in troubleshooting fit-up, fabrication, and welding issues. Additionally, the Welder Fitter III will support and mentor less experienced fitters and welders, maintain clean work areas and equipment, and follow all safety directives and procedures. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Strong fitting, layout, and assembly skills.
  • Ability to perform production welding to approved procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently achieve high first-pass weld acceptance rates.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, weld symbols, and fabrication details.
  • Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication methods.
  • Proficiency with measuring, layout, fitting, and welding equipment.
  • Knowledge of weld distortion control and heat input management.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Tacker qualification required.
  • Ability to pass required AWS and CWB welding qualification tests.
  • Ability to pass 3G and 4G welding qualification tests.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and overhead work.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Visual acuity to read drawings and inspect completed work.
  • Ability to safely operate overhead cranes and forklifts.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical, trade school, or vocational training preferred.
  • Experience with structural steel fabrication preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform FCAW welding and support MIG and SAW processes as required.
  • Determine and apply appropriate fit-up, welding sequence, fixturing, and bracing methods to minimize distortion.
  • Verify dimensions, alignment, elevation, and squareness throughout fabrication and welding operations.
  • Conduct visual inspections of fit-up and completed welds to ensure compliance with drawings and specifications.
  • Perform grinding, gouging, weld repair, and finishing operations as required.
  • Operate fabrication tools, welding equipment, overhead cranes, forklifts, and material handling equipment.
  • Assist in troubleshooting fit-up, fabrication, and welding issues.
  • Support and mentor less experienced fitters and welders.
  • Maintain clean work areas and equipment.
  • Follow all Konecranes safety directives and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
