The Welder welds metal components together to fabricate or repair products, such as machine parts, plant equipment, mobile homes, motors, and generators, according to layouts, blueprints or work orders, using brazing and a variety of arc and gas welding equipment. All work is accomplished IAW with the applicable Army regulations, DA PAMs, Technical Manuals, Technical Bulletins, and Repair Manuals. Welds metal parts together, using both gas welding or brazing and any combination of arc welding processes, performs related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding, repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes, and increases size of metal parts, positions, and clamps together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding. May locate and repair cracks in industrial engine cylinder heads, using inspection equipment and gas torch. May perform repairs only and be required to pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards of governmental agencies or professional and technical associations. The Welder, Combination, Maintenance will layout, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms, such as machinery frames, and pressure vessels. Implement welding techniques, metallurgy, and engineering requirements to include experimental welding to analyze engineering drawings and specifications to plan welding operations. Layout, position, and secure parts and assemblies according to specification, using straightedge, combination square, calipers, and ruler. Tack-weld or weld components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment to include MMW (Manual Metal Arc), FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding). Cut workpiece, using powered saws, hand shears, break press or chipping knife. Observe tests on welded surfaces, such as hydrostatic, x-ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications. Inspect grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring. Remove rough spots from workpiece, using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper. Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions. heat, form, and dress metal parts, using hand tools, torch, and arc welding equipment. Have the knowledge to ignite torch and adjust valve, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc. Develop templates and other work aids to hold and align parts and/or structures. Maintain good housekeeping, and energy conservation and safety precautions always. Comply with all personal protection requirements and able to wear full-face respirators.
