Under general supervision, performs a normal range of heli-arc welding and brazing operations primarily in the repair of a wide variety of product castings, or various metals and alloys requiring the ability to pass required certification test, and operate own rote tooling. Plans operation sequence to preheat parts, clean and prepare area, apply and finish weld to repair cracks, non-fills, pit marks, slag holes or other defects, or to apply metal for machining operations. Selects and sets currents, determines rod size, selects electrode, and determines other variables according to individual job requirements. Exercises care to obtain proper penetration; avoid burring, slag inclusion or other flaws. Some alloying of metals involved to obtain proper material strength. Disposes of work as required. As required, instructs others in techniques. Operates rote tooling to smooth and finish castings, and performs various other duties as required. Detects and reports improper operation, defective materials and unusual conditions to proper supervision. Maintains work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition. Follows prescribed safety regulations. Performs a variety of other tasks of equal or lesser complexity as assigned by supervisor.
