About The Position

Northern Manufacturing is a custom metal fabrication company specializing in complex stainless and carbon steel fabrications. We bring new welders into our training program to build the welding, fabrication, print-reading, and shop skills they need to be successful in our custom fabrication environment. As our Weld Training Lead, you'll take the lead in developing those employees—from teaching welding fundamentals and Northern's processes to coaching them through real-world fabrication work and evaluating when they're ready to move into production.

Requirements

  • Strong MIG and TIG welding and fabrication skills.
  • Strong print-reading skills and experience working from prints and 3D models.
  • The ability to explain and demonstrate welding and fabrication techniques clearly.
  • Leadership or mentoring experience and an interest in developing others.
  • The ability to give constructive feedback and hold employees accountable to expectations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adjust your approach based on an employee's skill level and learning needs.
  • Comfort using computers and manufacturing systems such as MES.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal teaching experience isn't required. We're more interested in someone who has strong welding and fabrication knowledge, communicates well, and genuinely enjoys helping other people improve.

Responsibilities

  • Train and coach new welders in MIG and TIG welding, print reading, fabrication fundamentals, and safe work practices.
  • Teach Northern's production and quality processes, including first-piece inspection, routes, MES, and applicable shop procedures.
  • Combine hands-on instruction with assigned online training to help employees apply what they're learning on the shop floor.
  • Work with trainees at different skill levels, providing clear feedback, demonstrations, and additional coaching where needed.
  • Evaluate and document trainee progress and help determine readiness to transition into production.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and address performance, safety, quality, and attendance expectations as needed.
  • Partner with weld leadership, Quality, HR, and other team members to support trainee development and successful placement into production.
  • Help continually improve Northern's weld training program as our needs and workforce develop.
