Weld Engineer 2

United Launch Alliance•Decatur, AL
•Onsite

About The Position

United Launch Alliance is hiring a Weld Engineer to work with metallic materials and processes, specializing in applied welding principles. The role analyzes, researches, designs, and develops materials and fabrication and application processes for use in engineering design and in structures, systems, and subsystems. It develops and applies material properties, design allowables, engineering processes, and quality specifications for aerospace welding applications. Work may include weld-assembly failure analysis, life predictions, requirements definition, and review and approval of subcontractor welding procedures. The engineer will also work with complex machinery, develop weld schedules and programs, and review weld data to identify trends and out-of-family welds and determine acceptable repairs. The position supports aerospace production and testing, including troubleshooting weld systems and resolving welding defects. It may require extended hours, weekends, and off shifts to support testing and production delivery. The role is based at ULA in Decatur, with relocation potentially available and travel requirements of 10%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Weld Engineering, Weld Engineering Technology, Materials Joining Engineering, or a related technical field from an accredited college or university.
  • At least 2 years of related work experience, including weld engineering expertise in resistance welding and welding aluminum alloys and stainless steel of varying thicknesses in one or more of these processes: automated gas tungsten arc welding, manual gas tungsten arc welding, friction stir welding, or laser welding.
  • Practical experience with weld system programming and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of military and industry process applications and standards related to welding and manufacturing operations.
  • Verbal and written communication skills, including requirements, documentation, and presentations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and off shifts as needed to support testing and production delivery.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights and in small spaces.
  • Exposure to manufacturing techniques and assemblies.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and reach solutions in a timely manner.
  • Attention to detail and ability to document observations and findings.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and/or model-based engineering.
  • Must be a U.S. Person as defined by ITAR because the position requires use of information subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting multiple welding processes in an aerospace production environment.
  • Experience developing and qualifying welding schedules; supporting or evaluating weld mechanical testing and metallurgical inspection; supporting weld tool design; and implementing weld process improvements.
  • Ability to coordinate with engineering and production operations personnel to develop and communicate non-conformance repair procedures and implement corrective actions.
  • Experience developing On the Job Training packages and certifications required for welding on ULA hardware.
  • Experience training and certifying technicians in friction stir welding (FSW), resistance spot welding (RSW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), orbital tube welding (OTW), and laser welding.
  • Experience working with organizational groups such as Facilities, Tooling, Production, Design Engineering, and equipment contractors.
  • Ability to recommend, develop, and implement new concepts, principles, and products for the Weld Center, focusing on important ULA issues.
  • Ability to provide leadership and mentorship to less qualified weld engineers and weld technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, research, design, and develop materials and related fabrication and application processes for engineering design and use in structures, systems, and subsystems.
  • Develop, analyze, and apply material properties and design allowables, and implement engineering processes and quality engineering specifications for aerospace welding applications.
  • Perform material analyses, including weld-assembly failure analysis, life predictions, and definition of requirements and specifications.
  • Review and approve subcontractor material-processing procedures for welding operations, as applicable.
  • Develop weld schedules and programs for complex machinery, and review weld data for trends and out-of-family welds to determine acceptable weld repairs.
  • Troubleshoot weld systems and support testing and production delivery activities.
  • Review visual, dye penetrant, and x-ray discrepancies and disposition rework or repair instructions to resolve welding defects.

Benefits

  • 401(k) match plus an additional employer contribution.
  • Discretionary annual incentive bonus for eligible employees.
  • Generous paid time off.
  • Flexible work environments.
  • Most salaried ULA team members work a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off; schedules may vary.
